The Daily Catch | Fishing Report – October 2024
October in the Gulf of Mexico has brought a bit of everything—from chilly cold fronts to the impact of Hurricane Milton, which stirred up some wind and rain. But despite these breezy conditions, we’ve managed to get out on the water for some excellent fishing, making the most of the ever-changing weather.
Bottom Fishing and Trolling Action
This month, we’ve been focusing on a combination of bottom fishing and trolling, with great results. Anglers have started to see the trolling bite pick up, especially as the water temperatures begin to cool. Along with that, Hogfish have been a steady catch for our bottom fishing trips. The fight these fish put up makes them a thrilling target for anglers.
For our shorter trips (4-6 hours), the action has been consistent. We’ve been bringing in plenty of panfish such as Grey Snapper and Porgy, which are perfect for a tasty meal after a successful day on the water. On the trolling side, we’ve been landing some jumbo Spanish Mackerel and have also seen a few Kingfish bites. As fall settles in, we expect the Kingfish run to heat up soon, promising even more excitement for anglers.
Extended Trips and Variety
With FWC closures limiting our offshore opportunities for certain species, we’ve been focusing on fishing closer inshore and making the most of the extra fishing time. Our longer trips (8-12 hours) have given us the chance to mix trolling with bottom fishing, targeting a range of species including Grunts, Lane Snapper, and Hogfish. We’ve also ventured to the wrecks in search of Amberjack, Sharks and Goliath Grouper, which provide an exhilarating battle.
Looking Ahead: Kingfish and More
As we continue into fall, the fishing conditions are expected to improve. The Kingfish run is just around the corner, and we’re eagerly anticipating the increased action.
