The Daily Catch | Fishing Report – September 2024

This September has been quite eventful in the Gulf of Mexico—filled with exciting fishing action and unexpected challenges. While we started the month with some incredible Gag Grouper fishing, we were soon met with the unexpected impact of Hurricane Helene, which slowed our fishing efforts toward the end of the month. Despite the weather disruptions, our team remains optimistic, and we’re gearing up for the upcoming Kingfish season!

Gag Grouper Fishing: A Challenging but Rewarding Month
We kicked off September with two fantastic weeks of Gag Grouper fishing, which took place primarily on our longer 8-12 hour trips. Using both live and dead cut bait, we were able to hook into some of these powerful fish. The fight is what makes catching Gags so thrilling—especially in shallow water where you have mere seconds to react before they either break free or stick you in a rock. It’s definitely a challenge, but don’t worry- typically you will get another chance if you get stuck. This season came a bit early this year making it a bit tricky to get these guys to poke their head out, but with some patience we came home with beautiful coolers full.

Along with the Gag Grouper, we also landed Hogfish, Mangrove Snapper, Lane Snapper, and Grey Snapper. The bottom fishing action was great, and we were able to mix in some exciting trolling as well. Jumbo Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda, Bonita, and various types of Jacks kept the action fast and furious during our trolling trips.

Hurricane Helene: Weathering the Storm Together
As many of you know, Hurricane Helene made its way through the Gulf, impacting our fishing schedule at the end of the month. Leading up to the storm, we, like many local fishermen and residents, took necessary precautions—securing boats, stowing gear, and preparing for the worst. The storm passed by Clearwater Beach, and while our boats were safe in their slips, the damage to the surrounding areas was significant.

In the aftermath, our incredible crew has been focused on helping with community clean-up efforts, and fishing has taken a backseat for now. Just when we thought things might be getting back to normal, we learned of another hurricane headed our way, which has further delayed our return to the water. But we’re staying strong and preparing for the next adventure—Kingfish season.

As we move forward and the weather calms down, we’re eagerly anticipating the start of Kingfish season. With cooler temperatures on the horizon, we’re looking forward to more great fishing opportunities in the weeks ahead.
